A newlywed woman in Bengaluru is fighting for her life after a suspected suicide attempt, with her family alleging relentless dowry harassment by her husband and in-laws as the cause. The incident has sent shockwaves through the B Channasandra locality in Ramamurthynagar.
Honeymoon Cut Short Amid Alleged Torment
The victim, identified as 26-year-old Ganavi S, had gotten married on October 29. According to a police complaint filed by her father, Shashikumar, the trouble began almost immediately after the wedding reception, which was hosted at Palace Grounds as per the groom's family's request. The family alleges that demands for dowry started soon after.
The situation reportedly escalated during the couple's honeymoon. Ganavi and her husband, Sooraj, a resident of Vidyaranyapura, had travelled to Sri Lanka last week for a 10-day trip. However, the alleged harassment continued even abroad, leaving Ganavi deeply distressed. Unable to bear the pressure, she cut short the honeymoon and returned to Bengaluru on Sunday, choosing to stay at her parents' house in B Channasandra.
A Critical Discovery and Police Action
The crisis peaked on Wednesday night. Ganavi was found unconscious in her bedroom at her parental home. She was immediately rushed to a hospital, where her condition remains critical, according to police officials from the Ramamurthynagar station.
Based on the formal complaint lodged by her father, the police have initiated legal proceedings. A case of dowry harassment has been registered against Ganavi's husband, Sooraj, and his family members. The authorities are actively investigating the serious allegations to piece together the sequence of events that led to the tragic incident.
Ongoing Investigation and Broader Implications
Police officials have confirmed that a thorough inquiry is underway to ascertain the complete circumstances surrounding the suicide attempt. The case highlights the persistent and grim reality of dowry-related crimes in the country, despite stringent laws against the practice.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the social evils that continue to plague society, often pushing victims to extreme steps. The community now awaits further developments in the police investigation as Ganavi battles for her life in the hospital.
