Bhiwandi Tailor Arrested for Raping Minor and Forcing Inter-Faith Marriage
In a disturbing case from Bhiwandi, a 20-year-old tailor was arrested on Friday for allegedly raping a minor girl and blackmailing her into an inter-faith marriage. The arrest occurred after activists from a Hindutva group disrupted the planned 'nikah' ceremony, which was scheduled for March 6, following alerts from the girl's relatives.
Details of the Alleged Crimes
Police reported that the accused, a school dropout, has been booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for rape and criminal intimidation. The IPC was invoked because the alleged rape occurred in 2024, before the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita replaced it. According to authorities, the tailor and the girl connected via social media in 2024 when he was 18 and she was a minor. Over two years, their relationship allegedly turned abusive, with the man exploiting her minor status to engage in a physical relationship.
When the girl turned 18 last month, the tailor reportedly intensified pressure on her to marry him. Assistant Commissioner of Police Suhas Hemade stated that the victim accused him of repeated blackmail and coercion for marriage after their physical relationship began. On March 6, the girl traveled to Bhiwandi for the 'nikah', but before the ceremony could proceed, her relatives informed a Hindutva group. Activists stormed the venue, rescued the girl, and handed her over to the local police station, which registered the offence and transferred the case to another station where the alleged crimes took place.
Legal and Social Implications
This case highlights serious issues of child sexual abuse and forced marriages in India. The use of the Pocso Act underscores the legal framework designed to protect minors from such exploitation. Police emphasized that the victim's identity has been protected in accordance with Supreme Court directives on sexual assault cases to ensure her privacy and safety. The incident has sparked discussions on the role of social media in facilitating such relationships and the importance of community vigilance in preventing crimes against minors.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to gather more evidence and ensure justice for the victim. The arrest serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges in combating sexual violence and the need for robust enforcement of laws like the Pocso Act.
