Bihar Police Inspector Faces Corruption Charges as EOU Uncovers Disproportionate Assets

The Economic Offences Unit (EOU) of Bihar Police has made significant recoveries during extensive searches conducted on Tuesday at five locations connected to police inspector Abhishek Kumar Ranjan. The operation yielded evidence of multiple high-value properties, substantial cash amounts, and various financial investments, all allegedly acquired through illicit means.

Details of the Corruption Case and Initial Findings

A formal case was registered against Ranjan on April 13 under Section 13(2) read with Section 13(1)(b) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, as amended in 2018. The allegations center on the accumulation of disproportionate assets valued at approximately Rs 1.7 crore, which represents a staggering 115.66% more than his known sources of income. Ranjan currently serves as the station house officer at Town police station in Kishanganj.

Nayyar Hasnain Khan, the Additional Director General of the EOU, provided crucial background information about the accused officer. "Ranjan joined the Bihar Police force as a sub-inspector in 2009 and received promotion to police inspector in 2023," Khan stated. "His service postings have spanned multiple districts including Muzaffarpur, Motihari (East Champaran), Patna, and Kishanganj."

The search operations were executed simultaneously by EOU teams led by deputy superintendents of police, acting upon a warrant issued by the Special Vigilance Court in Patna. The raids commenced at 8:30 AM and continued well into the late evening hours, revealing a pattern of substantial asset acquisition.

Property Portfolio and Financial Holdings Uncovered

Investigators discovered that Ranjan recently constructed a new G+3 house in Ramakrishna Nagar, Patna, during 2023-24. This property occupies approximately 2,200 square feet of land with an estimated construction cost exceeding Rs 2 crore. In Prabhunath Nagar, Chhapra, authorities found a 1,400-square-foot house built in 2019 with an approximate value of Rs 30 lakh.

Further property developments include a two-storey house currently under construction in the accused's native village of Paiga, Sadar, in Saran (Chhapra), estimated at around Rs 50 lakh. In Bagdogra (Siliguri), investigators uncovered a 6-kattha plot on Darjeeling Road purchased at the rate of Rs 17 lakh per kattha. Evidence indicates that Rs 84 lakh was paid in cash to the promoter for this transaction, with the plot boundary already fenced.

Additional land holdings include 3 katthas of land purchased in 2015 in Chandwara, under Ahiyapur police station in Muzaffarpur. This property was registered at only Rs 4 lakh despite reportedly involving much higher actual payments.

Cash Recoveries and Financial Investments

During the raid at the Patna residence, approximately Rs 8.5 lakh in cash was recovered. Investigators also obtained details of bank deposits totaling around Rs 8.5 lakh in accounts belonging to Ranjan and his wife, Ankita Kumari. The family maintains annual investments of approximately Rs 1 lakh in insurance policies and holds roughly Rs 20 lakh in mutual funds and shares.

Evidence of lavish spending emerged, including a recent payment of Rs 2.5 lakh as admission fee for Ranjan's elder son's enrolment in Delhi Public School, Siliguri. Investigators noted the police inspector's luxurious lifestyle, particularly his preference for expensive mobile phones. In January 2026, he traveled with his family from Bagdogra to Mumbai, staying for about five days at a five-star hotel. Details of this travel, accommodation, and related expenses are currently under examination.

Broader Investigation and Suspected Criminal Connections

The EOU has received further information suggesting Ranjan has made substantial investments in land dealings, possibly through organized syndicates. He is reported to own a flat on Sevoke Road in Siliguri, has purchased 6-7 trucks, and maintains significant property investments in Fatehpur Kanti, Muzaffarpur. Total investments in these ventures are suspected to exceed Rs 20 crore, with many assets likely held as 'benami' properties.

"During his posting in Kishanganj, the accused allegedly maintained close ties with local mafia elements, including the sand and liquor mafia and smuggling networks," officials revealed. "These connections are suspected to have facilitated his illegal wealth accumulation. The EOU is conducting a detailed investigation into all these leads."

The comprehensive investigation continues as authorities work to establish the full extent of the disproportionate assets and identify all parties involved in the alleged corruption network.
