The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Mahila Morcha, under the leadership of district president Sheenu Chugh, staged a protest against the Punjab Government at Ghantaghar Chowk in Ludhiana on Thursday. The demonstrators accused the state government of reneging on its pre-election pledge to provide Rs 51,000 to every woman.
Protest Details and Allegations
Speaking at the protest, Chugh stated that the Punjab Government had made several promises to women before the elections, including a commitment to give Rs 51,000 to each woman. However, the government has now decided to offer only Rs 1,000 per month to women from the General category and Rs 1,500 per month to those from the Scheduled Caste (SC) category, which Chugh described as discriminatory.
Chugh demanded that if the government is implementing a financial assistance scheme for women, all eligible women should receive an equal amount without any discrimination based on caste. The morcha called on the state government to honor its promise of providing Rs 51,000 and ensure equal treatment for all women.
Attendance and Slogans
During the protest, BJP activists raised slogans against the state government and demanded the protection of women’s rights and equal respect. A large number of women activists were present, including state vice-presidents Leena Taparia and Rashi Agarwal; general secretaries Seema Sharma and Anjali Sharma; and councillors Ruchi Gulati, Reena Jain, Neeru, Aruna, Hema Chopra, Dr Santosh Meenu, Neetika, Renu Rana, and Sonu.
The protest highlights ongoing tensions between the BJP and the ruling Punjab Government over unfulfilled promises made to women voters. The morcha's leaders reiterated their commitment to holding the government accountable for its election pledges.
