BMC Suspends Official After Chembur Tree Fall Kills 1

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has suspended a garden department official following a tragic incident in Chembur where a tree fell on a school van, resulting in the death of a 10-year-old student. The suspension was announced on July 1, 2026, as part of the civic body's immediate response to the accident.

Details of the Incident

The accident occurred on Monday morning when a large tree branch crashed onto a school van near the Chembur Naka area. The van was carrying students to a local school at the time. The deceased, identified as Rohan Sharma, a Class 5 student, succumbed to his injuries on the spot. Two other children sustained minor injuries and were treated at a nearby hospital.

According to eyewitnesses, the tree had been leaning precariously for several days, but no action was taken despite complaints from local residents. The BMC's garden department is responsible for maintaining trees and ensuring they do not pose a risk to public safety.

BMC's Action and Investigation

BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani ordered a probe into the incident and suspended the garden department official in charge of the Chembur ward. “We have suspended the official pending a detailed inquiry. This is a serious lapse in our maintenance protocols,” Gagrani said in a statement. The BMC has also formed a committee to inspect all trees in the area and assess potential hazards.

The suspended official, whose name has not been disclosed, faces charges of negligence. The BMC has warned of strict action against any other officials found responsible. The incident has sparked outrage among parents and local activists, who have demanded better maintenance of public spaces.

Impact and Safety Concerns

The tree fall highlights ongoing safety issues in Mumbai, where aging trees and inadequate maintenance have led to several accidents. According to BMC data, at least 15 tree-related incidents have been reported in the city in the past six months, resulting in three deaths. The Chembur incident has prompted calls for a comprehensive tree audit and improved emergency response systems.

Local MLA Sunil Shinde said, “This tragedy could have been avoided if the BMC had acted on complaints. We will raise this issue in the state assembly.” The school van driver, who escaped unhurt, has been cooperating with police investigations. The BMC has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the victim's family.
