At least 10 people were injured when a Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus crashed into a stationary Vayu Vajra bus at a traffic signal in Bengaluru on Saturday morning, police said.
Accident at Traffic Signal
The accident occurred at around 8 am near the Hebbal flyover when the BMTC's air-conditioned Vayu Vajra bus was waiting at a traffic signal. A regular BMTC bus, which was approaching from behind, failed to stop and crashed into the stationary bus, causing significant damage to both vehicles.
According to the police, the driver of the BMTC bus lost control of the vehicle, leading to the collision. The impact of the crash was such that the rear of the Vayu Vajra bus was severely damaged, and several passengers were thrown off their seats.
Injuries and Rescue Operations
At least 10 people, including passengers from both buses, sustained injuries. They were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The injured are reported to be in stable condition, with no life-threatening injuries.
"We received a call about the accident at around 8:15 am. Our team reached the spot within minutes and provided first aid to the injured. They were then taken to the hospital for further treatment," said a police officer involved in the rescue operation.
Traffic Disruption and Investigation
The accident caused a major traffic jam on the Hebbal flyover, with vehicles backed up for several kilometers. Traffic police were deployed to manage the situation and clear the road. The damaged buses were later towed away, and normal traffic flow was restored by noon.
Police have registered a case against the driver of the BMTC bus for negligent driving. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident. "We are examining the driver's statement and checking the CCTV footage from the area to ascertain the circumstances leading to the crash," the officer added.
BMTC Safety Concerns
This incident has once again raised questions about the safety of BMTC buses and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic rules. In recent months, there have been several accidents involving BMTC buses, prompting calls for better driver training and vehicle maintenance.
"We are deeply concerned about the safety of our passengers. We will conduct a thorough investigation into this incident and take appropriate action against those responsible," a BMTC official said.
