BSF Inspector Apprehended in Siliguri for Alleged Drug Smuggling Operation

In a significant development, a Border Security Force (BSF) inspector was arrested by Darjeeling police on Sunday for allegedly smuggling brown sugar worth crores of rupees from Bihar to Siliguri. The arrest occurred during a routine naka check at Phansidewa, highlighting a serious breach of trust within a key security force.

Accused Identified as Alok Kumar Ravikar

The accused has been identified as Alok Kumar Ravikar, a resident of Gurabazar in Bihar's Katihar district. According to police officials, Ravikar is currently posted in Chhattisgarh but had previously served in the Siliguri region from 2017 to 2018. This prior posting made him familiar with local routes, which authorities believe he exploited for illicit activities.

Police Action Based on Tip-Off

Acting on specific intelligence that a blue vehicle carrying contraband was en route to Siliguri, police intensified checks at the Muraliganj check post. During the initial search of the vehicle, officers recovered a few bottles of liquor. However, a more thorough inspection revealed over 3 kilograms of brown sugar concealed inside the vehicle's seat, indicating a sophisticated smuggling attempt.

Official Statement from Darjeeling SP

Darjeeling Superintendent of Police Pratiksha Jharkhariya provided details on the case. "Initially, we were unaware that the accused was a BSF official. However, upon verification of the documents found in his possession, including his official identity card, we confirmed his identity," she stated.

Jharkhariya further explained, "He was posted here in 2017–2018 and is now serving in Chhattisgarh. Since he served in this region before, he was well aware of the routes. A case under the NDPS Act was initiated. The accused will be produced before a court on Monday. An investigation was initiated to uncover further links and determine whether a larger network is involved."

Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation

The arrest has led to the initiation of a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Ravikar is scheduled to be produced before a court on Monday, where legal proceedings will commence. Authorities are conducting a detailed investigation to trace potential accomplices and dismantle any broader smuggling network that may be operating in the region.

This incident raises concerns about the integrity of personnel in security forces and underscores the ongoing challenges in combating drug trafficking across state borders. The police have emphasized their commitment to rigorous enforcement and follow-up actions to ensure justice is served.
