Maharashtra Builder and Social Media Influencer 'Pookie Don' Arrested in Thane with Weapons Cache
In a significant development, a 55-year-old builder and social media influencer, widely known as 'Pookie Don', was arrested in Maharashtra's Thane district for allegedly possessing a substantial cache of weapons. The arrest has sent shockwaves through the local community and online circles, highlighting the intersection of digital fame and criminal activity.
Details of the Arrest and Raid
The accused, identified as Surendra Panduranga Patil, was taken into custody on Saturday night by the Crime Branch. This arrest came barely a week after he had secured bail in another unrelated case, raising questions about his ongoing legal troubles. Acting on a credible tip-off, a specialized police team conducted a late-night raid at Patil's bungalow located in the Dawdi area of Dombivli.
During the search, officers discovered the weapons cleverly concealed behind a fake panel in a newly installed shoe rack. Investigators noted that this shoe rack appeared out of place and did not match the overall interior design of the house, suggesting it was specifically installed for hiding the illicit arsenal.
Weapons and Ammunition Seized
The police recovered a diverse and alarming collection of weapons and ammunition from the hidden compartment. The seized items include:
- Five country-made pistols and revolvers, some of which were marked with the inscription "Made in USA"
- Two air guns
- 371 live cartridges
- 167 pellets
- A sword
- A button knife
- Another sharp-edged weapon
- Two steel rods
The total estimated value of this extensive haul is approximately Rs 10 lakh. Law enforcement officials emphasized that the sheer volume of ammunition indicates the stockpile was fully functional and ready for use, rather than being merely decorative or outdated.
Social Media Persona and Investigation
Surendra Panduranga Patil had cultivated a prominent online presence under the monikers 'Pookie Uncle' and 'Pookie Don', amassing over three lakh followers on Instagram. His social media reels often featured quirky dance videos that garnered lakhs of views, but more disturbingly, he also projected himself as a local strongman. In several clips, Patil was seen brandishing firearms and even showcasing the police protection he once received, which was later withdrawn due to concerns over his conduct.
While Patil has claimed that the seized weapons were merely props intended for his gangster-themed social media content, investigators are probing deeper into his motives. Authorities are examining whether he was planning to assemble what they describe as a "mini-army" or if he intended to supply arms to local criminal elements. Given his history as a known offender with prior cases, police are treating this matter with utmost seriousness.
Legal Charges and Ongoing Probe
Patil has now been formally booked under the stringent provisions of the Arms Act and the Maharashtra Police Act. As a history-sheeter with a record of previous offenses, this arrest adds another layer to his legal challenges. The investigation is ongoing, with police focusing on uncovering the source of the weapons, their intended use, and any potential connections to broader criminal networks in the region.
This case underscores the growing concerns about individuals using social media platforms to glorify violence and criminal behavior, while also raising alarms about illegal arms possession in urban areas. The arrest serves as a stark reminder of the thin line between online persona and real-world actions, with law enforcement agencies increasingly vigilant about such activities.
