Canacona Residents Voice Alarming Concerns Over Escalating Drug Trade
Residents of Canacona are expressing deep-seated fears regarding a significant proliferation of the drug trade within their community. There is a growing worry that students, including those in high school and college, may be increasingly drawn into this dangerous network, posing a serious threat to the youth and local safety.
Former Municipal Chairperson Highlights Visible Drug Peddling
Dayanand Pagui, the former chairperson of the Canacona Municipal Council, has publicly stated that drug peddling has become more evident in specific areas of the region. He emphasized the urgent need for law enforcement to take decisive action against those involved in these illicit activities.
"Police need to come down heavily on peddlers. Not just college students, but even some high school students are consuming drugs. Some of them will eventually start peddling as well," Pagui warned, underscoring the cyclical nature of the problem where users may transition into dealers.
Local Reports of Drug-Fueled Parties in Secluded Areas
Another local resident reported that parties involving drug use are frequently held in secluded areas, particularly in Agonda and Palolem. These gatherings are believed to facilitate the spread of drug consumption among younger individuals, further exacerbating community concerns.
Previous Police Raids and Arrests in Canacona
Earlier this year, the Canacona police conducted multiple raids aimed at curbing the drug trade. These operations resulted in the seizure of substantial quantities of drugs and led to the arrests of a foreign national and two local individuals. However, residents argue that these measures have been insufficient to address the root of the issue.
Calls for Sustained and Intensive Police Crackdown
Santosh Gaonkar, a concerned local, voiced a common sentiment among residents, stating, "Arresting small-time peddlers will not help. There needs to be a regular crackdown on drugs and peddlers." This highlights the demand for more consistent and rigorous enforcement strategies to dismantle the drug networks effectively.
The community's apprehension is palpable, with many urging authorities to implement long-term solutions to prevent the drug trade from gaining a stronger foothold. The involvement of students remains a particularly distressing aspect, as it threatens the future well-being of Canacona's youth and the overall social fabric of the area.
