Police File Case Against Production House Over Actor Rahul Banerjee's Death

Police in Talasari, Odisha, have registered a formal case against five key members of a production house, holding them prima facie responsible for the tragic death of Bengali actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee, aged 43. The incident occurred during the shooting of a television serial at Talasari beach in Balasore district on March 29. The accused have been booked on charges of negligence and for allegedly misrepresenting facts related to the fatal event.

Details of the Case and Accused Individuals

Balasore Superintendent of Police Pratyush Diwakar confirmed the registration of the case, stating, "We have registered the case against five key functionaries of Magic Moments Motion Picture Pvt Ltd — directors Subhasish Mondal, Saibal Banerjee, and Leena Gangopadhyay, along with floor executive producer Shantanu Nandi and production manager Chandra Sekhar Chakraborty, also known as Sekhar Chakraborty. They face charges of negligence leading to the actor's death and for fabricating a false narrative around the offence. The investigation is ongoing, and the suspects, as well as other crew members, will be interrogated thoroughly."

Complaint Lodged by Actor's Wife

The case was initiated following a complaint filed late Saturday night by Rahul Banerjee's wife, actress Priyanka Sarkar, at the Talasari Marine police station. Prior to this, an unnatural death case had been registered at the Digha Mohana coastal police station in West Bengal on March 29. In her complaint, which has been reviewed by sources, Priyanka Sarkar made serious allegations against the production house.

She asserted that the production house failed to obtain official permission from Odisha government authorities to conduct the shoot and did not implement necessary safety protocols for filming in the sea. According to her, local residents had warned the crew to halt shooting due to the beach's notorious reputation for quicksand and unpredictable tides, but these warnings were disregarded.

Allegations of Concealment and Negligence

Priyanka Sarkar accused the production house of concealing the true sequence of events and misleading the police. She pointed out that contradictory audio-video statements from crew members raised suspicions, while accounts from local witnesses, aired on news channels, highlighted negligence and a lack of safety measures. In her FIR, she alleged, "It establishes that the production house committed gross negligence, deliberately avoided accountability, and misrepresented the facts to build a false narrative and escape legal consequences."

Production House's Version of Events

Subhasish Mondal, one of the accused directors, recently provided a different account to the media. He claimed that the official shooting had concluded when Rahul Banerjee insisted on an unscripted drone shot. According to him, Rahul and co-actor Sweta Mishra were filming in knee-deep water when a wave unsettled Sweta, prompting her to leave the scene. Rahul reportedly went deeper into the sea for a second take despite requests from the crew to return. A stronger wave then caused him to slip and swallow water. Subhasish stated that the team and lifeguards attempted to rescue him, and though Rahul briefly responded while being transported to the hospital, he was declared dead upon arrival.

Background and Investigation Status

The case underscores significant concerns about safety protocols in film and television productions, particularly in hazardous environments like beaches. The police investigation is focused on verifying the conflicting accounts and determining the extent of negligence involved. Authorities are examining whether proper permissions were secured and if adequate safety measures were in place during the shoot.

This incident has drawn attention to the need for stricter enforcement of regulations in the entertainment industry to prevent such tragedies. As the probe continues, further details are expected to emerge regarding the responsibilities of the production house and the circumstances leading to Rahul Banerjee's untimely death.
