The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested IPS officer Deepak Gahlawat in connection with a Rs 3 crore bribery case, officials confirmed on Tuesday. The arrest stems from a trap operation conducted by the CBI in June, during which Delhi Police Crime Branch Inspector Pradeep Singh and an alleged middleman, Rajkumar, were caught red-handed accepting a bribe.
Details of the Trap Operation
According to CBI sources, the operation was launched after a complaint alleged that Inspector Pradeep Singh, in collusion with middleman Rajkumar, had demanded a bribe of Rs 3 crore from a private individual to settle a case. The CBI laid a trap and apprehended Singh and Rajkumar while they were accepting the bribe amount. During subsequent investigations, the role of IPS officer Deepak Gahlawat, who was then serving as the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in the Crime Branch, came to light.
Role of IPS Officer Deepak Gahlawat
Investigators allege that Gahlawat was the mastermind behind the bribery racket, using his position to influence the outcome of cases in exchange for money. He is accused of directing Inspector Singh to collect bribes on his behalf. The CBI has been questioning Gahlawat since his name surfaced during the interrogation of the arrested individuals. He was taken into custody after evidence, including call records and financial transactions, pointed to his involvement.
"The CBI has gathered substantial evidence against Gahlawat, including recorded conversations and bank statements showing illegal payments," a CBI official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. "His arrest was necessary to prevent tampering with evidence and to ensure a thorough investigation."
Legal Proceedings and Reactions
Gahlawat was produced before a special CBI court in Delhi, which remanded him to CBI custody for five days. The court noted the seriousness of the allegations and the need for further interrogation to unearth the full extent of the conspiracy. The CBI has also seized documents and digital devices from Gahlawat's office and residence.
The Delhi Police has suspended Inspector Pradeep Singh and initiated departmental proceedings against him. The middleman, Rajkumar, remains in judicial custody. The case has sent shockwaves through the Delhi Police hierarchy, prompting calls for stricter oversight of senior officers.
Impact on the Force
This arrest marks one of the highest-profile corruption cases involving an IPS officer in recent years. It underscores the CBI's ongoing crackdown on corruption within law enforcement agencies. The agency has been under pressure to clean up its own ranks and demonstrate its commitment to fighting graft. The case is likely to lead to further investigations into other officers who may have been involved in similar activities.
