CBI Files FIR, Forms SIT in Ex-PA Murder Case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has officially filed a First Information Report (FIR) and taken over the investigation into the murder of Chandranath Rath, who previously served as the personal assistant to Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in West Bengal. This development was reported by Rajshekhar Jha.

Formation of Special Investigation Team

To ensure a thorough and efficient probe, the CBI has constituted a seven-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), which will be headed by an officer of the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG). A high-level meeting was convened at the CBI headquarters in New Delhi on Tuesday to review the progress of the case and coordinate the investigative efforts. The SIT has already sought the remand of suspects who have been arrested in connection with the crime.

Office Order and Case Registration

According to an official office order issued to formalize the formation of the SIT, this action follows the registration of a case by the CBI's Anti-Corruption Branch in Kolkata. The order outlines the composition and leadership of the team, which is tasked with conducting a comprehensive investigation.

Leadership and Composition of the SIT

The SIT will be led by DIG Pankaj Kumar Singh, who is from the CBI's Special Crimes Division based in New Delhi. The team comprises a diverse group of senior officials, including Superintendent of Police (SP) Subhash Chandra Kundu and SP Anil Kumar Yadav, both from New Delhi. Additionally, the team includes Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) and inspectors drawn from various CBI branches across the country, specifically from Dhanbad, Patna, Ranchi, and Lucknow. This multi-location representation aims to bring diverse expertise to the investigation.

Operational Supervision and Additional Resources

The operational supervision of the SIT's work will be the responsibility of the Joint Director of the Kolkata Zone. This senior official has been authorized to draft additional personnel from local CBI units as and when required, ensuring that the investigation proceeds without any hindrance and with all necessary resources at its disposal. The move underscores the CBI's commitment to a rigorous and unbiased probe into the murder of Chandranath Rath.
