CBI's Ground Zero Investigation Unravels 2016 Murder Case in Karnataka

In a significant development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has successfully reinvestigated a 2016 murder case in Karnataka, overturning initial claims by Dharwad police that attributed the crime to a property dispute. The gruesome incident, which occurred three years prior, required the CBI to start the investigation from scratch, but the dedication of the team yielded crucial results.

Concrete Evidence and Key Testimonies Strengthen Case

Special public prosecutor Shivananda Perla highlighted the pivotal role of concrete evidence in building the case. CCTV footage captured most of the accused individuals fleeing the crime scene while armed, and call detail records (CDRs) linked suspects Vinay Kulkarni and Basavaraj Muttagi. Perla noted that a week before the murder, Kulkarni had engaged in a fierce altercation with the victim, Yogesh Goudar, and issued severe threats, adding to the evidence trail.

The investigation gained further clarity when prime suspect Basavaraj Muttagi turned approver, providing a detailed confession statement. This testimony neatly outlined the roles of all involved, including Kulkarni, and was instrumental in filing the chargesheet. CDRs showing prolonged calls between Muttagi and Kulkarni further solidified the case against the accused.

Attempts to Derail the Case Thwarted by CBI

Despite efforts by Vinay Kulkarni to undermine the investigation, including threatening witnesses, the deposition process proceeded effectively. Perla explained that from the outset, Kulkarni attempted to sabotage the case by collaborating with Dharwad police to frame it as a property dispute. To support this narrative, he fabricated land documents near the residences of Goudar and Muttagi.

However, when the CBI assumed control of the investigation, these plans collapsed. The resilience of many witnesses, who stood firm against intimidation, was crucial in ensuring justice prevailed. Another special public prosecutor, S Hema, alongside Perla, affirmed that the case remained robust despite these challenges.

This reinvestigation underscores the importance of thorough investigative work in uncovering the truth behind complex criminal cases, particularly when initial reports may be misleading or influenced by external factors.
