Centre appoints five new SC judges, strength now 37

The law ministry on Monday notified the appointment of five judges for the Supreme Court, taking the strength of the apex court to 37, including the Chief Justice of India. The five new judges will assume charges after taking oath on Tuesday.

New Appointees

The newly appointed judges are senior advocate Venkita Subramani Mohana, and four high court chief justices: Justice Shree Chandrashekhar of Bombay High Court, Justice Sheel Nagu of Punjab and Haryana High Court, Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva of Madhya Pradesh High Court, and Justice Arun Palli of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.

Current Strength and Vacancy

With these appointments, the Supreme Court will still have one vacancy to be filled as per the enhanced sanctioned strength. The law ministry had on May 16 promulgated an ordinance, the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Ordinance, 2026, increasing the strength of Supreme Court judges from 33 to 37 with immediate effect. With this amendment, the Supreme Court strength was increased to 38 judges, including the Chief Justice of India.
