In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Chandigarh Police's local crime branch apprehended a young man on Wednesday for attempting to smuggle heroin into the city. The operation led to the seizure of a substantial quantity of the narcotic substance.
Patrol Team's Vigilance Leads to Arrest
The incident unfolded when a team from the crime branch was on a routine patrol in the area of Sector 46. The officers, trained to spot suspicious activity, decided to stop and check individuals in the vicinity. Their attention was drawn to a man near the turn between Sectors 46 C and D, who was seen walking towards them.
Upon noticing the police presence, the individual, later identified as Amit Kumar, a 22-year-old resident of Faidan village in Chandigarh, immediately turned around and attempted to flee on foot. However, the alert officers gave chase and successfully caught him after a brief pursuit.
Heroin Seized, NDPS Case Registered
A subsequent search of the suspect's person proved the officers' suspicions correct. The police team recovered 21.66 grams of heroin from Amit Kumar's possession. Following the seizure, the authorities wasted no time in booking the accused under the stringent Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The same day, the arrested individual was produced before a local court in Chandigarh. The court, after hearing the initial details of the case, remanded Amit Kumar in police custody. This custodial remand will allow investigators to conduct a thorough interrogation.
Focus on Unraveling the Supply Chain
The primary objective of the ongoing police investigation is to trace the origins of the seized contraband. Investigators are now questioning the arrested man intensively to identify his suppliers and any other drug peddlers who might be operating in and around Chandigarh.
This arrest highlights the continued efforts of the Chandigarh Police to combat the menace of drug smuggling within the city. The proactive action by the patrol team in Sector 46 underscores the importance of ground-level vigilance in disrupting the narcotics trade and keeping the community safe.
