Chandigarh Traffic Police Impose Republic Day Restrictions in Sector 17

In preparation for the Republic Day celebrations, the Chandigarh traffic police have put in place comprehensive traffic restrictions and diversions around the Parade Ground in Sector 17. These measures, which came into effect early Monday morning, are aimed at ensuring the smooth and secure conduct of the official function scheduled at the venue.

Elaborate Security and Traffic Management

The restrictions were activated from 6:30 AM onwards, with the city witnessing heightened security arrangements. A substantial force of around 1,100 police personnel has been deployed across Chandigarh to oversee the event and prevent any potential untoward incidents. This deployment underscores the importance of maintaining order during the national celebration.

Road Closures and Alternative Routes

According to the official traffic advisory issued by the authorities, several key road stretches in the vicinity of the Parade Ground have been closed to public movement. Commuters are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and utilize alternative routes to avoid disruptions.

The affected areas include:

  • The stretch from the sector 16/17/22/23 roundabout leading to the Gurdial Singh petrol pump in Sector 22-A on Udyog Path.
  • The route from the old district court in Sector 17 to Shivalik Hotel, located behind the Parade Ground.
  • The road from Lyon's Restaurant light point near the Municipal Corporation office to the Parade Ground.

Parking Regulations and Access Points

In addition to the road closures, strict parking restrictions have been enforced. General parking is not permitted in front of shops in the Sector 22-A market from 6:30 AM until the conclusion of the Republic Day function. Special invitees who possess authorized car parking stickers are instructed to approach the Parade Ground via the sector 16/17/22/23 roundabout on Udyog Path and park their vehicles in the designated area in front of the Sector 22-A market.

For the general public attending the event, access to the Parade Ground is recommended from either the ISBT Sector 17 Chowk or the 17/18 light point side. To facilitate the dispersal of crowds after the event, traffic will be diverted away from ISBT Sector 17 Chowk on Udyog Path between 11:30 AM and 12:15 PM. During this period, vehicles approaching from the 17/18 Light Point, Aroma Light Point, sector 18/19/20/21 Chowk, and Cricket Stadium Chowk will be redirected, with only buses allowed on this specific stretch.

Security Protocols for Attendees

The police have also issued a stern advisory to all attendees, urging them not to carry any objectionable items to the venue. Prohibited items include bags, matchboxes, knives, cigarettes, weapons, liquor, inflammable materials, electronic devices, black flags, and banners. This measure is part of the broader security strategy to ensure a safe and orderly environment for everyone participating in the Republic Day festivities.

These coordinated efforts by the Chandigarh traffic police highlight the meticulous planning involved in managing large-scale public events in the city. Residents and visitors are encouraged to cooperate with the authorities and adhere to the guidelines to ensure a successful and incident-free Republic Day celebration.
