Chemical Engineer Arrested for Murder at Delhi De-Addiction Centre
A shocking incident of violence unfolded at a private drug de-addiction centre in Alipur, Outer Delhi, where a 27-year-old chemical engineer allegedly murdered a fellow patient by slitting his throat. The brutal attack occurred in the early hours of Friday, leading to the immediate arrest of the suspect at the scene.
Details of the Fatal Altercation
Police received information around 4 am regarding a stabbing in Hiranki village. Upon arrival at the rehabilitation centre, officers discovered bloodstains in multiple areas of the premises. The victim, identified as 22-year-old Arun Kumar from Burari, had already been transported to Burari Hospital, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer North) Hareshwar Swami, the suspect, Arun Joshi, was apprehended at the centre with the alleged murder weapon—a knife—in his possession. During interrogation, Joshi disclosed that a quarrel had erupted between the two patients several days prior, during which Kumar had allegedly abused him. Motivated by revenge, Joshi carried out the fatal attack.
Background of the Victim and Accused
Arun Kumar came from an economically disadvantaged background; his father works as a rickshaw driver. Family members revealed that Kumar had struggled with addiction since his teenage years, which led to his admission at the rehabilitation centre for treatment.
In contrast, Arun Joshi, a resident of Tri Nagar, completed his schooling and graduation in Rohini before earning a degree in chemical engineering in 2019 from a local college. His father operates a rented medical shop near their home. Police investigations revealed that Joshi developed a cannabis habit around 2015 during his college years and was admitted to the private de-addiction centre in Hiranki approximately nine months ago for rehabilitation.
Circumstances of the Attack
Another police officer detailed that the incident occurred around 3:30 am while Kumar was asleep. Joshi allegedly attacked him with a knife, slitting his throat. At the time, there were about 27 patients present at the centre, along with guards on duty. Authorities have secured CCTV footage from the premises, which reportedly shows Joshi at the scene during the incident.
Ongoing Investigations and Broader Concerns
A case under section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered. Investigators are currently examining the de-addiction centre's records and probing potential negligence on the part of the facility. This tragic event highlights ongoing issues within some rehabilitation centres in Delhi.
In a related context, last December, police arrested the owner of an illegal de-addiction centre in southwest Delhi's Dichaon Kalan following the death of a patient. Additionally, in December 2024, authorities busted a de-addiction centre in Outer Delhi's Nangloi that was allegedly fuelling patients' addictions by supplying high-dose drugs. That private facility was also reported to function as a hub for drug traffickers, who sourced, packaged, and sold narcotics to both centre inmates and others in the surrounding area.
The arrest of Joshi underscores the urgent need for stricter oversight and regulation of de-addiction centres to prevent such violent incidents and ensure the safety and well-being of patients seeking recovery.
