Witchcraft Allegations Trigger Tragic Child Murder in Jharkhand Village

A horrifying incident has shaken a remote village in Jharkhand's Khunti district, where a six-year-old boy was brutally beaten to death following witchcraft accusations against his mother. The tragic event has exposed the persistent superstitions and violence associated with witch-hunting practices in certain rural areas of India.

Gruesome Discovery in Forest Location

According to police reports, the victim, identified as Vishnu Munda, was allegedly lured away while playing near his home in Salgajola village on Friday. The child was taken to the nearby Lodrolata forest where he was subjected to a fatal assault. Villagers who rushed to the location after being alerted by relatives discovered the boy's body with visible injuries on his head, face, and abdomen.

The complaint filed by the father, Laxman Munda, reveals chilling details about the motive behind this heinous crime. Laxman stated that his wife had been branded as a witch several months earlier following the death of a child from neighboring Bhima Toli village. The family had received threats that their children would be killed in retaliation for what villagers believed was witchcraft practice.

Arrests Made Under Multiple Legal Provisions

Maranghada police have arrested two residents in connection with the murder. The primary accused, Jagarnath Munda alias Jagar Munda of Bhima Toli village, allegedly carried out the physical assault using the wooden handle of a spade. The second accused, Raghu Munda, is believed to have instigated the crime following the death of his grandson two to three months earlier.

The case has been registered under Section 103(1) (murder) and Section 238(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, along with Sections 3 and 4 of the Jharkhand Witchcraft Prohibition Act, 2001. These specific sections address the serious offenses of branding someone as a witch and the subsequent harassment and violence that often follows such accusations.

Pattern of Witchcraft-Related Violence

This tragic incident highlights the dangerous persistence of witchcraft-related violence in certain communities despite legal prohibitions. Family members revealed that the threats had been ongoing for months, with the accused allegedly warning that Laxman's children would be killed as revenge for what they perceived as witchcraft practices.

Sobran Munda, a relative who filed the initial complaint, provided detailed accounts of how the child was taken from the fields near his home and murdered in the forest. The police investigation is currently underway, with officials questioning the arrested individuals to establish the complete sequence of events and identify any additional persons involved.

The killing has sent shockwaves through the local community, raising serious questions about the effectiveness of awareness campaigns and legal measures designed to combat witch-hunting practices in tribal areas. This case represents yet another tragic example of how superstition and traditional beliefs can lead to extreme violence, particularly against vulnerable members of society.

Authorities have emphasized their commitment to pursuing justice in this case while also addressing the broader issue of witchcraft accusations that continue to plague certain regions. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the work still needed to eradicate such harmful practices from rural communities across India.
