Bihar Cleric Issues Video Apology After Arrest for Remarks Against UP Chief Minister's Mother

A Muslim cleric from Bihar, who was apprehended by authorities on Monday night for allegedly making derogatory comments targeting Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's mother, has formally tendered an apology through a video statement. In the recording, Maulana Abdullah Salim explicitly seeks forgiveness from the prominent political leader, expressing deep regret for his inappropriate utterances.

Arrest and Judicial Proceedings

Maulana Abdullah Salim was taken into custody from Purnea district in Bihar by the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF). Following his arrest, he was transported on transit remand to Bahraich district in Uttar Pradesh. On Tuesday, he was presented before a local court, which subsequently ordered a 14-day judicial remand, placing him in custody as legal proceedings advance.

Video Apology and Admission of Mistake

In the video statement, Salim openly admits his error and appeals for clemency. "I, Abdullah Salim, admit my mistake. During the conference, some inappropriate and offensive words came out of my mouth, which should not have been spoken. I fold my hands and sincerely apologise for my actions," he stated emphatically. He further emphasized the importance of maintaining social harmony, adding, "No statement should be made that hurts any individual, religion or disturbs social harmony," while specifically requesting forgiveness from Chief Minister Adityanath.

FIRs and Legal Charges

Two separate First Information Reports (FIRs) have been officially registered against Maulana Abdullah Salim. One was filed at the Nagar Kotwali police station in Bahraich, and another in Balrampur district. The charges include promoting enmity and delivering inflammatory statements during a speech he gave on May 5, 2024. This address occurred at a "social reform and educational awareness conference" held in Bihar's Bhagalpur district.

Background of the Controversy

The controversy erupted when Salim allegedly made derogatory remarks directed at Yogi Adityanath's mother. These comments later circulated widely on various social media platforms, triggering sharp reactions from the public and political circles. The dissemination of the video prompted immediate legal action by authorities in Uttar Pradesh, leading to the cleric's arrest and the subsequent filing of cases.

Police Statements and Investigation

Bahraich Superintendent of Police Vishwajeet Srivastava informed media outlets that the police are committed to building a robust case against the cleric. "A chargesheet will be filed against the cleric and ensure that a watertight case is made so that conviction can be achieved in record time," he asserted. Additionally, Amit Pathak, the Inspector General of the Devipatan range, confirmed that during interrogation, Salim admitted to making the remarks and issued the apology, underscoring the cleric's cooperation with the investigation.

The case highlights ongoing tensions and the legal repercussions of inflammatory speech, particularly when targeting high-profile political figures and their families. Authorities are proceeding with the judicial process to ensure accountability and uphold social harmony in the region.
