Coimbatore Police Conduct Major Night-Time Vehicle Crackdown

In a decisive move to enhance road safety, the Coimbatore City Police executed a series of surprise vehicle inspections across multiple locations on Sunday night, resulting in the seizure of more than 200 vehicles and the booking of numerous offenders for traffic violations.

Extensive Operation Led by Senior Officials

A specialized team, under the direct supervision of City Police Commissioner N Kannan and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) S Ashok Kumar, carried out the intensive checks from 9:00 PM on Sunday until 1:30 AM on Monday. The operation targeted twelve strategic points throughout the city, including high-traffic areas such as Gandhipuram, SITRA, Thomas Park, Circuit House Junction on Avinashi Road, and Chinthamani Junction in North Coimbatore.

Detailed Breakdown of Seizures and Violations

The police action led to the confiscation of a significant number of vehicles involved in various infractions:

  • 13 motorcycles were seized for having tampered number plates or operating without any registration plates at all.
  • 24 motorcycles were impounded due to altered silencers that produced excessively loud and disruptive noise levels.
  • 183 motorcycles were taken into custody for lacking proper documentation, such as valid registration certificates.

In addition to the vehicle seizures, law enforcement officials booked 39 individuals for riding motorcycles while under the influence of alcohol, highlighting a serious concern for public safety. The total fines imposed on riders who violated traffic regulations amounted to Rs 79,000, underscoring the financial consequences of non-compliance. All seized vehicles have been securely stored in nearby parking facilities and police stations pending further legal action.

Police Address Safety Concerns and Future Measures

Deputy Commissioner Ashok Kumar emphasized the growing issue of traffic violations, particularly among younger demographics. "Many college students and young men with high-capacity bikes are flagrantly violating traffic rules by installing modified silencers that generate extreme noise. Furthermore, these individuals often operate their vehicles at dangerously high speeds, which significantly increases the risk of accidents," he stated.

Kumar further explained that the city police are implementing a range of proactive strategies to reduce accident rates, with surprise vehicle checks being a key component of this broader initiative. "Our goal is to create a safer environment for all road users by consistently enforcing traffic laws and deterring reckless behavior," he added, reassuring the public of ongoing efforts to maintain order on Coimbatore's streets.

This operation reflects a robust commitment to curbing traffic-related offenses and promoting responsible driving practices in the region.
