Himachal Police Nab Couple for Kidnapping Neighbor's Newborn Baby
Police in Himachal Pradesh's Baddi town have made a significant arrest in a disturbing child abduction case. They detained a married couple from Uttar Pradesh for allegedly stealing a newborn boy from their neighbors. The authorities successfully rescued the infant and handed him back to his biological parents.
Swift Police Action Leads to Recovery
Baddi police acted quickly after receiving a kidnapping complaint. They identified and arrested Rohit, 25, and his wife Rekha, 23, from Rampur in Uttar Pradesh. The police took them into custody on January 15. Officers rescued the baby boy who had been kidnapped just two days earlier on January 13.
The rescued infant was reunited with his biological parents on January 16. Police completed all necessary legal procedures before the handover. The child is now safe with his family.
Background of the Accused and Victims
Both couples involved in this case are migrant labourers. They lived as tenants in the same building in Billanwali village. This village sits near the industrial town of Baddi in Solan district.
The accused couple comes from Sambhal district in Uttar Pradesh. They have no children of their own. Their neighbors, Munita and her husband Jatinder, are parents to three daughters. Munita recently gave birth to a baby boy.
The Disputed Agreement and Kidnapping
Ashok Kumar, Assistant Superintendent of Police in Baddi, explained the situation. "Both couples knew each other very well," he stated. "When Munita became pregnant last year, she and her husband promised Rekha and her husband they would give them their fourth child. This promise was part of a written agreement."
Munita delivered her baby boy on January 9. Rekha accompanied her to the local government hospital in Baddi. After the birth, Rekha demanded the child as per their agreement. Munita and Jatinder refused to hand over their newborn son.
On January 13, the accused couple managed to steal the infant from Munita's room. They immediately fled the scene. Munita filed a First Information Report with local police the following day.
Police Investigation and Legal Proceedings
The Women Police Station in Baddi registered the case under Section 137(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. This section deals with kidnapping offences. Police formed a special investigation team under Assistant Sub-Inspector Lakhbir Singh's supervision.
Technical surveillance helped officers trace the accused couple. The offence they face carries a potential punishment of less than seven years imprisonment. According to the law, arrest isn't mandatory in such cases. The accused could potentially be released after receiving a legal notice.
Baddi police continue their investigation into this kidnapping case. They are gathering additional evidence and statements to strengthen their prosecution.
