Dalit Man Killed by In-Laws for Intercaste Marriage in Bijnor

A 24-year-old Dalit man from Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, was allegedly murdered by his wife's family members and their associates after the couple chose a court marriage against the family's wishes. The incident highlights the persistent issue of honor killings in the region.

Arrests Made in Murder Case

Three accused, including the woman's brother Atar Singh, were arrested on Monday night. According to police, on the night of April 29, Singh and his accomplices intercepted the victim, Gulshan Kumar, near the Mahmoodpur railway tracks in Bijnor. They pushed him in front of a moving train, attempting to stage the murder as a suicide.

Background of the Relationship

Gulshan Kumar, a resident of Syohara's Jujhela area, had been in a relationship with Singh's sister for four years. The couple got married six months ago, which angered the woman's family, who felt their social reputation was damaged. This led to the conspiracy to kill Kumar.

Bijnor Superintendent of Police Abhishek Jha stated, "An FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including murder, criminal acts by several persons, rioting, and kidnapping, along with the SC/ST Act. Raids are ongoing to apprehend the remaining accused."

During interrogation, Singh confessed that the couple's relationship and marriage had hurt the family's reputation in society, prompting the murder plot. The case underscores the dangers faced by interfaith and intercaste couples in parts of India.
