Defence Acquisition Council to deliberate on Rs 1 lakh crore proposals today
Defence Acquisition Council to discuss Rs 1 lakh crore proposals

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, is set to deliberate on proposals worth approximately Rs 1 lakh crore on July 3, 2026. The meeting will consider the acquisition of additional K-9 Vajra self-propelled artillery guns, Kamikaze (loitering) drones, Man-Portable Air Defence Systems (MANPADS), and additional air defence guns.

Key proposals on the agenda

The DAC will evaluate the procurement of more K-9 Vajra howitzers, which are already in service with the Indian Army. The Kamikaze drones, also known as loitering munitions, are designed to loiter over a target area and strike upon command. The MANPADS and additional air defence guns aim to bolster India's air defence capabilities, particularly along the borders.

Strategic importance

These acquisitions are part of India's ongoing modernisation efforts to enhance its defence preparedness. The K-9 Vajra, a 155mm/52 calibre tracked self-propelled howitzer, has been indigenously manufactured by Larsen & Toubro in collaboration with South Korea's Hanwha Defence. The Kamikaze drones represent a growing trend in asymmetric warfare, providing precision strike capabilities.

Expected outcomes

The DAC is expected to grant Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for these proposals, paving the way for further procurement processes. The meeting underscores the government's focus on indigenisation and quick procurement to address critical capability gaps. According to defence sources, the proposals are likely to be cleared, given the urgency of modernisation.
