The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, VK Saxena, has mandated a major safety overhaul in the national capital, focusing on deploying women police personnel in Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses and ensuring strict adherence to the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in schools. The directives were issued during a high-level meeting on public safety.
Women Police in DTC Buses
To enhance the safety of women commuters, the LG has ordered the deployment of women police officers in DTC buses, especially during peak hours and on routes identified as vulnerable. This initiative aims to curb incidents of harassment and ensure a secure travel environment for women and girls.
Implementation Plan
The Delhi Police will coordinate with the DTC to identify priority routes and schedules. A dedicated team of women constables and sub-inspectors will be assigned to buses, and their presence will be complemented by increased surveillance through CCTV cameras and GPS tracking. Regular training sessions will be conducted to sensitize the personnel.
Strict POCSO Compliance in Schools
In another significant move, the LG has directed all schools in Delhi to strictly comply with the POCSO Act. This includes mandatory reporting of any suspected cases of child sexual abuse, background checks of all staff, and the establishment of child safety committees.
Measures for Schools
Schools must ensure that all employees, including teaching and non-teaching staff, undergo police verification. They are also required to conduct regular awareness programs for students and parents on child safety and POCSO provisions. Non-compliance will result in strict action, including cancellation of recognition.
The LG emphasized that the safety of women and children is a top priority for the administration. He directed the concerned departments to submit a compliance report within a month. The announcements have been welcomed by women's rights activists and parents, who have long demanded such measures.
