Bengaluru: Following the seizure of more than 1,000 litres of smuggled liquor from a Delhi parcel special train at Yeshwantpur station last week, Delhi police on Monday announced the dismantling of an interstate liquor smuggling network and the arrest of three suspects, including one in Bengaluru.
Operation Details
During the operation on May 18, Delhi police recovered 80 boxes of illicit liquor from a tempo and arrested the driver, identified as Akhilesh Kumar Singh. In a coordinated effort in Bengaluru, 74 boxes were recovered from a parcel train originating from Okhla in Delhi on May 21. The total count of seized boxes reached 154, valued at Rs 1.5 crore.
Interrogation Leads to Further Arrests
During interrogation, Akhilesh revealed that he transported liquor consignments to railway parcel booking points in Delhi under the instructions of Upender Singh and his son, Ankit Singh. Based on this information, police conducted raids at the father-son's residence and recovered an additional 11 boxes of illicit liquor.
Subsequently, a team of Delhi police was dispatched to Bengaluru, where 74 boxes were recovered from Yeshwantpur railway station in a joint operation with the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Karnataka excise department. The 74 boxes seized in Bengaluru contained 1,118 liquor bottles of various brands, valued at Rs 66 lakh.
Legal Action
AVG Logistics, the firm that leased the parcel van, was issued a notice under Section 35(3) of the BNSS Act, 2023 and directed to appear before the investigation team.
On Monday, excise department officials confirmed the arrest of Veerendra Kumar, suspected to be part of the syndicate, at Yeshwantpur. Veerendra has been sent to judicial custody and will be questioned to uncover further details about the racket, according to R Venkatesh Kumar, excise commissioner of Karnataka.
