Four months after the death of a 28-year-old woman, her husband and in-laws have been booked in a dowry case by the Ludhiana police. The victim, identified as Priya, was found dead at her residence in the Dugri area on March 15. Her family alleged that she was subjected to constant harassment and torture for dowry by her husband, Ravi, and his parents.
Details of the Case
According to the complaint filed by the victim's father, the accused demanded a car and cash as additional dowry after the marriage. When the demands were not met, they allegedly tortured Priya both physically and mentally. On the day of the incident, Priya was found hanging from a ceiling fan. Initially, the police registered a case of unnatural death, but after an investigation and post-mortem report, the family's allegations were corroborated.
Accused Named in FIR
The police have named Ravi, his mother Suman, and father Rajesh in the First Information Report (FIR) under sections 304-B (dowry death) and 498-A (husband or relative of husband subjecting a woman to cruelty) of the Indian Penal Code, along with relevant provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act. The accused are currently absconding, and raids are being conducted to arrest them.
Senior police officials stated that the post-mortem report confirmed suicide, and the evidence gathered pointed towards dowry harassment. The victim's father expressed relief that the law is taking its course, though he lamented the loss of his daughter. This case highlights the persistent issue of dowry-related violence in India, despite strict laws against it.
The investigation is ongoing, and the police have appealed to the public for any information regarding the whereabouts of the accused. The family has demanded strict punishment for the culprits to serve as a deterrent.
