A potentially fatal incident was narrowly avoided in Bengaluru on Thursday night when a speeding car, driven by an allegedly intoxicated man, crashed into a popular restaurant on a busy road. Six individuals standing outside had a miraculous escape, moving aside just seconds before impact.
Miraculous Escape Captured on CCTV
The entire sequence was captured by a CCTV camera, which has since gone viral. The footage shows a group of six people standing outside the Barbeque Nation restaurant on Indiranagar's 100 Feet Road, engaged in conversation. At approximately 11:35 PM, they notice a Skoda car speeding recklessly towards them. Reacting instantly, the group scrambles to their left, barely avoiding being struck. The car then rams into the restaurant's exterior wall.
Sequence of Events and Police Action
According to the Bengaluru police, the accused driver, identified as Derrick Tony, a 42-year-old software engineer and resident of Domlur, was under the influence of alcohol. He was driving at high speed and failed to negotiate a left turn. His Skoda first hit a central divider, then collided with a parked motorcycle, before finally crashing into the wall of the restaurant.
Traffic police from Jeevan Bima Nagar arrived at the scene and conducted alcohol tests on Tony, confirming he was drunk. The police took him into custody and seized his Skoda car. "We have registered a case against Derrick, and his car has been impounded," stated a police officer.
Injuries and Legal Charges Filed
While the six people outside the restaurant escaped unharmed, a 20-year-old two-wheeler rider named Zabeer Ahmed sustained minor injuries in the accident. The police clarified that the group had just finished dinner and were chatting outside when the incident occurred.
Following a complaint from a Barbeque Nation staff member, the police have booked Derrick Tony under sections 281 (rash or negligent driving endangering human life) and 125 (acts endangering life through rash behavior) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Additionally, provisions related to drunk driving under the Motor Vehicles Act have been invoked against him.
The incident has once again highlighted the grave dangers of drunk and reckless driving on Bengaluru's streets, putting innocent lives at risk.
