Drunk Man Steals Police Vehicle in Jalna, Tracked 90km to Paithan
In a bizarre incident in Maharashtra, a man allegedly under the influence of alcohol fled with a police vehicle from the taluka police station in Jalna, only to be tracked down nearly 90 kilometers away in Paithan, within the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, on Monday morning. Police officers from both Jalna and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar confirmed the unusual theft and subsequent recovery.
Sequence of Events at Jalna Police Station
According to a police officer, the incident unfolded in the early hours after a patrolling team had returned to the taluka police station upon completing their night rounds. The driver of the police vehicle reportedly went to freshen up, leaving the vehicle parked within the station premises with the keys still inside, creating an opportunity for the theft.
The accused had initially come to the police station to lodge a complaint against another person who allegedly misbehaved with him. However, noticing that he was under the influence of alcohol, the station duty officer advised him to return later after regaining sobriety. Instead of leaving peacefully, the man stepped out of the station and entered the parked police vehicle.
Theft and Pursuit Using Technology
He started the vehicle and drove away, with police personnel taking some time to notice that the vehicle was missing. Once they realized the theft, a search operation was immediately launched. Authorities checked footage from CCTV cameras installed outside the police station and utilized the vehicle's GPS tracking system to trace its location in real-time.
The vehicle was tracked to Paithan, located approximately 90 kilometers from Jalna. The Jalna police promptly alerted their counterparts in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar rural police, who laid a trap and successfully intercepted the vehicle. Fortunately, the police vehicle was recovered without any reported damage.
Arrest and Bizarre Explanation
When intercepted, the accused was still under the influence of liquor, according to police statements. He was taken into custody and brought back to Jalna for further legal action, including being sent for a medical examination to confirm his intoxication levels.
In a strange twist, a senior police officer from Jalna police revealed that when questioned, the man claimed that although he did not arrive at the police station in a four-wheeler, he still believed the police vehicle to be his own and proceeded to drive it away. This statement highlights the impaired judgment caused by his intoxicated state.
