A young widow from Jharkhand's Dumka district is fighting for her life after a horrific attack that has shocked the local community. 21-year-old Maku Murmu sustained severe burn injuries when she was allegedly set on fire by a male friend and his wife on the night of November 13.
The Tragic Incident in Sitasal Village
The victim, identified as Maku Murmu, resides in Sitasal village under the jurisdiction of Shikaripara police station. According to the police complaint filed by her mother Phulmani Hansda, the accused Mongla Dehri and his wife carried out the brutal attack at Maku's in-law's home in Sitasal.
The FIR reveals that Maku and Mongla had been in a relationship for approximately three years, though recent months saw frequent disputes between them. On the fateful night of November 13, Mongla allegedly visited Sitasal village with his wife and engaged in an argument with the victim.
Police Action and Medical Emergency
The situation turned violent when the accused reportedly poured petrol on Maku and set her ablaze. Police personnel from Shikaripara police station promptly responded after receiving information about the incident.
Officer in-charge Amit Lakra confirmed that the police first took the critically injured woman to a hospital in neighboring Rampurhat, West Bengal, for immediate medical attention. However, given the severity of her burns, doctors referred her to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital for advanced treatment.
"She is under treatment at Burdwan Medical College and is unable to speak at the moment. Her statement will be recorded when she is able to speak," stated OC Lakra, highlighting the grave condition of the victim.
Ongoing Investigation and Community Impact
In a significant development, police arrested Mongla Dehri from Shikaripara market on Saturday. However, his wife remains absconding, and law enforcement agencies are actively working to trace her.
The case has drawn attention to issues of women's safety in the region, particularly concerning vulnerable individuals. Maku, who is a widow, leaves behind a young girl child, adding another layer of tragedy to this devastating incident.
