Major Drug Bust in Etawah: Police Seize 40,000 Bottles of Banned Cough Syrup
In a significant crackdown on illegal drug trafficking, the Etawah police have made a major seizure in the Friends Colony police station area of Kanpur. The operation resulted in the confiscation of a staggering 40,000 bottles of a banned cough syrup and the recovery of Rs 4.35 lakh in cash. Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, which has been registered under the stringent provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for alleged illegal smuggling activities.
Tip-Off Leads to Dramatic Raid and Arrests
According to detailed reports, the breakthrough came when police personnel from Friends Colony were conducting routine checks on vehicles and suspicious individuals at the Bharthana intersection. During this vigilance operation, an informant provided a crucial tip-off about a container loaded with a large quantity of banned cough syrup, which was parked in the Gaurapura area. Acting swiftly on this intelligence, a specialized police team immediately rushed to the specified location to investigate further.
Upon reaching the spot, the officers discovered a Bihar-registered car parked near the suspicious container. The police swiftly took three people into custody from the vehicle. During subsequent interrogation, the accused confessed that the cough syrup stored in the container belonged to them and was intended to be transported to Bihar. They revealed that since the syrup is banned in Bihar, the driver had deliberately left the container parked in Etawah to avoid detection in their home state.
Comprehensive Seizure and Legal Action Under NDPS Act
The thorough search conducted by the police led to the dramatic recovery of the 40,000 bottles of the prohibited cough syrup. In addition to the narcotic haul, approximately Rs 4.35 lakh in cash was also recovered from the possession of the accused individuals. Circle Officer (City) Abhay Narain confirmed the details of the operation, stating, "The search led to the recovery of 40,000 bottles of cough syrup. Around 4.35 lakh rupees in cash were also recovered from the accused. We have seized the container and car and registered a case under sections of the NDPS Act."
The police have seized both the container and the car used in the alleged smuggling operation as part of the evidence. This case highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat the illegal trade of banned substances, particularly in regions bordering states with stricter regulations. The use of the NDPS Act underscores the serious nature of the offense, which carries severe penalties for those involved in drug trafficking and smuggling activities.
