Former Army Captain Convicted of Wife's Murder Apprehended After Four-Year Fugitive Run

In a significant breakthrough, Fazilka police have successfully arrested Sandeep Tomar, a former Army captain who was convicted of murdering his wife, from Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh. This arrest comes nearly four years after Tomar absconded following his conviction, marking the end of an extensive manhunt.

Details of the Crime and Conviction

Tomar had been sentenced to life imprisonment in 2022 in connection with the brutal murder of his wife, Shweta Singh, in Abohar. According to police reports, he had been living under a changed identity and working at a juice factory in Chhindwara to evade arrest, demonstrating a calculated effort to escape justice.

Investigators revealed that Tomar, a resident of Kanpur, was posted at the Abohar cantonment when the tragic incident occurred in 2013. Shockingly, within just five months of their marriage, he strangled his wife to death. Initially, he attempted to mislead authorities by claiming it was a case of suicide, but the truth soon emerged.

Investigation and Legal Proceedings

Acting on a complaint filed by the victim's father, Ram Naresh, police registered a case of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide. However, subsequent investigation uncovered that the death was a clear case of murder by strangulation, leading to Tomar's arrest. He spent approximately five years in jail before being granted bail, only to face conviction later.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court convicted Tomar on September 23, 2022, and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Despite this verdict, he fled soon after, initiating a prolonged period as a fugitive. Police noted that he altered his appearance and identity to avoid detection, complicating the search efforts.

Collaborative Efforts Lead to Arrest

With the assistance of Madhya Pradesh Police and advanced technical surveillance, authorities were able to trace Tomar to Chhindwara, where he was finally apprehended. He was brought back to Abohar on Saturday, produced before a magistrate on Sunday, and subsequently sent to judicial custody, ensuring he faces the consequences of his actions.

Police emphasized that ongoing efforts had been dedicated to tracking him during the period he was absconding, highlighting the persistence and coordination involved in bringing him to justice. This case underscores the challenges in apprehending fugitives and the importance of inter-state police collaboration in such high-profile investigations.
