GRP Launches Probe After Explosion-Like Sound on New Railway Track in Fatehgarh Sahib
The Government Railway Police (GRP) have initiated a comprehensive investigation following reports of an explosion-like sound on a newly constructed railway track near Sirhind town in Fatehgarh Sahib district. The incident occurred on Friday night, resulting in minor damage to the track and injuries to a freight train driver.
Incident Details and Immediate Response
According to GRP officials, the event took place around 10 pm near a railway crossing as a freight train was passing through the dedicated freight corridor. The front glass of the train's engine sustained damage, causing minor injuries to the driver. Medical assistance was promptly provided to the driver, who managed to drive the train to Sirhind station after the incident to report the matter.
GRP AIG AS Ghumman stated that no evidence of explosives has been found so far. "There are no confirmed clues pointing to the use of explosives at this stage. However, we are probing the origin of the explosion-like sound that was heard at the site," he said. A small portion of the track was damaged but was quickly repaired by railway authorities, with restoration work completed by early Saturday morning to ensure normal rail traffic resumed.
Investigation and Official Statements
Sirhind GRP SHO sub-inspector Gurpreet Singh confirmed that a case has been registered under Section 150 of the Railways Act against unidentified persons. The driver reported that a minor explosion occurred, leading to the damage and his injuries from shattered glass. While unverified reports suggested a powerful explosion and possible use of explosives, no official agency has corroborated these claims, and authorities have refrained from commenting on the exact nature or cause of the blast-like sound.
The railway line involved is newly constructed and primarily designated for freight trains. GRP and railway authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident, with further details awaited as the probe progresses.
