The story begins with Ashok Sharma and his family, who took precautions to safeguard their gold ornaments before departing for the Kumbh Mela in January of last year. They carefully stored their valuable jewellery in a small box, which they then placed inside a sack at their residence, believing this would protect it from potential theft during their absence.
Tragically, during Diwali cleaning preparations, the sack containing the hidden gold was inadvertently disposed of and sold as ordinary household scrap to local scrap trader Haji Akhtar Khan. The family remained completely unaware of their loss until they began preparing for Diwali puja rituals and discovered the ornaments were missing.
Over the following months, the Sharmas approached the scrap dealer multiple times, desperately searching for their precious belongings. However, at that time, the jewellery could not be located despite their persistent efforts.
The Scrap Dealer's Remarkable Discovery and Decision
Haji Akhtar Khan explained the sequence of events in detail. "They brought the scrap to me approximately six months ago and sold it as regular household waste," he recounted. "At that initial transaction, we did not notice anything unusual or valuable mixed in with the materials."
He continued, "After about two months had passed, they returned to inform me that some of their gold jewellery might have been accidentally included in the scrap. I advised them to search thoroughly, but explained that if they had come within 20 days or a month, we could have reviewed our CCTV footage. By that point, too much time had elapsed and nothing could be found through that method."
The breakthrough came unexpectedly. "Just two days ago, while carefully examining some scrap material, I discovered a plastic packet that someone might have assumed contained brass items," Khan revealed. "I immediately suspected it might belong to the Sharma family and took it to a professional jeweller for verification. The jeweller confirmed it was 100% pure 22-karat gold, weighing exactly 100 grams."
Without hesitation, Khan made his decision: "I determined this gold rightfully belonged to Sharma Ji and no one else, and therefore it should be returned to its proper owners. My family and I believe in earning our livelihood through honest hard work and cannot in good conscience keep someone else's property. My entire family agreed unanimously that the jewellery must be returned."

Ashok Sharma expressed overwhelming gratitude during a formal meeting at the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) office. "We suffered a devastating financial and emotional loss during Diwali when, through a terrible mistake, approximately 10 tolas of gold went into the scrap," he shared emotionally. "Today, Haji Akhtar Khan Sahab has demonstrated an exceptional example of honesty that inspires us all. He personally came to the ACP Sahab's office, handed over our gold, and informed us to collect our precious belongings. I thank him from the very bottom of my heart."
ACP Jitesh Malhotra provided official confirmation of the incident, noting that the scrap dealer operates his business near the Agra Canal area and had indeed purchased the scrap from the Sharma family six months earlier. He verified that the recovered items matched perfectly with the detailed list provided by the Sharmas.
Commending the dealer's extraordinary integrity, ACP Malhotra stated that such honesty is increasingly rare in today's society.
