FDA Officer Charged with Rs 15 Lakh Bribery in Gutka Transport Scandal

A significant corruption case has emerged in Maharashtra, with the Laxmipuri police station in Kolhapur registering a case on Tuesday night against a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officer. The officer, currently posted in Solapur, is accused of demanding a bribe of Rs 15 lakh from an intermediary to prevent legal action against a truck owner and driver involved in a gutka transportation incident.

Complaint and Investigation Details

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) took decisive action after thoroughly verifying a complaint filed by a hotelier from Jaysingpur with the Lokayukta in Mumbai. During the verification process, a crucial piece of evidence—a recorded WhatsApp call where the bribe was allegedly demanded—was accepted as valid proof, strengthening the case against the accused officer.

Sequence of Events Leading to the Case

According to the complaint submitted by ACB Deputy Superintendent of Police Vaishnavi Patil, the incident dates back to April 17, 2023. On that day, an FDA inspector intercepted a truck transporting gutka at Mangalwedha in Solapur. Subsequently, the inspector contacted the complainant hotelier through a WhatsApp call and explicitly demanded Rs 15 lakh as a bribe to avoid taking action against the truck owner and driver.

The hotelier demonstrated remarkable vigilance by recording the WhatsApp call, which later served as pivotal evidence. After gathering sufficient proof, the hotelier filed a formal written complaint with the state Lokayukta in Mumbai, initiating the legal proceedings.

Official Statements and Legal Proceedings

Vaishnavi Patil provided further insight, stating, "The Lokayukta took cognisance of the complaint and forwarded it to the Anti-Corruption Bureau in Kolhapur for further investigation and action." This step underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating allegations of corruption, particularly in cases involving public officials and regulatory bodies like the FDA.

The case highlights ongoing challenges in combating corruption within government departments, especially in sectors like food and drug regulation where enforcement actions can have significant financial implications. The use of digital evidence, such as WhatsApp call recordings, is becoming increasingly common in such investigations, aiding in the prosecution of corrupt practices.
