The Ludhiana police have arrested five members of a gang for allegedly demanding Rs 50 lakh as extortion from a village sarpanch. The accused were apprehended from different locations following a complaint by the sarpanch, who reported receiving threatening calls.
Extortion Attempt Foiled
The sarpanch, identified as Gurpreet Singh of village Jodhan, complained to the police that he had been receiving calls from unknown numbers demanding Rs 50 lakh. The callers threatened to harm him and his family if the money was not paid. Acting on the complaint, the police formed a team and tracked down the accused.
Arrests Made
The arrested individuals have been identified as Jaspreet Singh, Harmanpreet Singh, Mandeep Singh, Gurpreet Singh, and Ravi Kumar. They were produced in a local court, which remanded them to police custody for further investigation.
According to the police, the gang had been active in the region and was involved in multiple extortion cases. The police are now investigating if the gang had any links with other criminal networks.
The sarpanch has thanked the police for their prompt action and hopes that the arrests will send a strong message to other criminals.
