Dombivli Police Crack Down on Dangerous Flyover Stunts, Book Five Youths
In a decisive move against reckless driving, the Vishnunagar police in Dombivli have registered cases against five motorists for engaging in rash driving, overspeeding, and performing perilous stunts on the newly constructed Mothagaon–Mankoli flyover. The action was prompted by viral videos that circulated widely on social media platforms, highlighting the grave risks posed to public safety.
Viral Video Triggers Police Investigation
The incident, which occurred on January 26, captured multiple vehicles racing at high speeds and executing dangerous manoeuvres on the flyover, endangering commuters. The video was initially shared by BJP corporator Dipesh Mhatre from the Mankoli region, who called for stringent measures against those flouting traffic regulations. Following its rapid spread online, DCP Atul Zende directed the Vishnunagar police, in collaboration with the Dombivli city traffic branch, to identify the vehicles and initiate legal proceedings.
Legal Action Under Motor Vehicles and Maharashtra Police Acts
Authorities traced the vehicles involved and filed cases under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act and the Maharashtra Police Act. In one notable instance, the driver of a Thar Jeep, identified as Piyush Mhatre (21), was booked and fined Rs 1,500, with an additional compounding amount of Rs 3,500 recovered. Other individuals facing charges include Vedant Mahesh Sawant (18), driver of a Hyundai Verna (MH05-GD-0049), and Pradeep Dhakne (21), driver of a Scorpio (MH05-CV-3988), both accused of racing and reckless driving.
Additionally, police booked Vishal Vishwakarma (22) and Krishna Vishwakarma (19) for filming the stunt race, underscoring the zero-tolerance approach towards such violations. All five youths hail from affluent families in the city, with parents primarily involved in the construction business.
Police Issue Stern Warning on Traffic Safety
Police officials have issued a strong warning, emphasizing that rash driving and stunts on flyovers can result in fatal accidents. They urged citizens to adhere strictly to traffic rules, stating that similar violations will face stringent consequences in the future. This crackdown serves as a reminder of the authorities' commitment to ensuring road safety and curbing hazardous behaviors that threaten public welfare.
