Bengaluru civic authorities have registered a case against four individuals for illegally dumping waste at a spot that had recently been beautified as part of a city improvement project. Officials confirmed that the action was taken after the offenders declined to pay the prescribed fine for littering.
Incident at Beautified Site
The spot, located in a residential area of Bengaluru, had been transformed under a municipal beautification initiative involving landscaping and installation of public amenities. However, within weeks of completion, waste was found dumped at the site, prompting a crackdown by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) enforcement team.
Refusal to Pay Penalty
According to civic officials, the four accused were caught on surveillance cameras dumping household and construction debris at the site late at night. When confronted, they refused to pay the penalty imposed under the Solid Waste Management Rules, leading to the registration of a formal complaint. “They were given an opportunity to settle the matter by paying the fine, but they refused. Hence, we proceeded with legal action,” an official said.
Growing Problem of Illegal Dumping
Illegal waste dumping remains a persistent challenge in Bengaluru, despite multiple beautification drives and increased surveillance. The BBMP has deployed mobile enforcement units and installed CCTV cameras at vulnerable spots to deter offenders. In this case, the four individuals have been booked under the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act and relevant environmental regulations. They face potential fines or imprisonment upon conviction.
Community Response
Residents welcomed the action, expressing hope that it would serve as a deterrent. “We have seen many spots cleaned and beautified, only to be turned into garbage dumps within days. Strict action is the only solution,” said a local resident. The BBMP has appealed to citizens to use designated waste collection points and report violations via its helpline.
