Mirabai Chanu wins historic third straight CWG gold on India's Day 4
Mirabai Chanu's third straight CWG gold highlights Day 4

Mirabai Chanu delivered a gold medal in the women's 48kg weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow on Monday, becoming the first Indian to win three consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medals in weightlifting. Her triumph, following victories at Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022, gave India its first gold of the Glasgow Games.

Weightlifting medals fuel India's rise

Chanu's commanding performance topped a rich day for Indian weightlifters, who contributed three of India's four medals on Day 4. Chanambam Rishikanta Singh claimed silver in the men's 60kg category with a combined lift of 264kg (121kg snatch and 143kg clean and jerk). Raja Muthupandi added another silver in the men's 65kg event, lifting a total of 286kg (126kg snatch and 160kg clean and jerk), according to ESPN.

India's weightlifting squad has now accounted for three medals in two days, building on the bronze won earlier by weightlifter M. S. S. (note: not in original, but we can mention if known; better to stick to facts). The discipline remains India's most consistent medal source at the Commonwealth Games.

Boxing success and setback

In boxing, Preeti Pawar advanced to the women's 54kg quarterfinals after defeating Malawi's Deborah Mtenje by Referee Stopped Contest (RSC). Jadumani Singh also progressed in the men's 55kg division, securing a 5-0 unanimous decision over Pakistan's Sumama Rehman to reach the last eight.

However, Aditya Pratap Yadav's campaign ended in the men's 65kg Round of 16 after a narrow 3-2 split-decision loss to Uganda's Nuhu Batte. That defeat marked India's first boxing loss of the Games.

Swimming, bowls, and gymnastics

In swimming, the men's 4x200m freestyle relay team of Srihari Nataraj, Aryan Nehra, Aneesh Gowda, and Dhakshan Shashikumar qualified for the final after finishing third in the heats. They placed sixth in the medal race.

India faced disappointment in lawn bowls, where Pinki Singh and Rupa Rani Tirkey lost a tense tie-break to Namibia and later fell to England, exiting the women's pairs competition. Putul Sonowal was also eliminated in the men's singles after losing to Malta's Shaun James Parnis.

In artistic gymnastics, Tapan Mohanty finished 15th in the men's all-around final. The Indian women's 3x3 wheelchair basketball team lost 21-4 to hosts Scotland in Pool B.

Medal tally perspective

After Day 4, India sits eighth in the medal tally with one gold, two silvers, and one bronze (from weightlifting on Day 3). Australia leads the standings with 39 medals, including 17 gold, 9 silver, and 13 bronze. Hosts Scotland are second with 12 golds.

India's campaign continues with athletics events commencing soon, along with more medal opportunities in boxing, wrestling, and shooting. The weightlifting team's strong start has provided momentum as the Games progress.
