Four Additional Suspects Apprehended in Vasant Vihar Brigadier Attack
In a significant development in the assault case involving a serving Brigadier and his son, Delhi police have made four more arrests, elevating the total number of individuals detained to six. The incident, which occurred last Saturday in the upscale Vasant Vihar area of southwest Delhi, has drawn widespread attention due to the involvement of a high-ranking military officer.
Identification and Background of the Accused
The newly arrested individuals have been identified as Surjit Singh (36), Sunil Sharma (53), Ashish (32), and Satender (35). All are residents of Mehram Nagar and Bhiwani in Haryana. This follows the earlier apprehension of Satender alias Sonu (49) and Sanjay Sharma (56), both also from Mehram Nagar.
According to police reports, the initial confrontation began when Satender and Sanjay were confronted for consuming liquor inside their SUV in a public space. Investigations have revealed that Surjit is acquainted with the main accused, Satender. The group was together in Mehram Nagar when Surjit received a call from Satender regarding a quarrel in Vasant Enclave. They subsequently drove to the location in Surjit's white car.
Sequence of Events and Police Action
An officer detailed that upon arrival, a confrontation ensued, after which the group returned home. However, upon learning that a formal case had been registered, they attempted to evade authorities by going into hiding. Police later tracked them down and made the arrests. The car used in the incident has been recovered, and further examination is currently underway, the officer added.
Notably, Satender is a director at a firm that provides aviation services, including chartered and cargo flights, and is involved in the sale and purchase of aircraft and related parts. Sanjay Sharma operates a dhaba in the local area.
Legal Charges and Victim's Account
An FIR has been filed at the Vasant Vihar police station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including:
- Section 115: Voluntarily causing hurt
- Section 126: Wrongful restraint
- Section 351: Criminal intimidation
- Section 79: Word, gesture, or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman
- Section 191: Rioting
- Section 190: Every member of an unlawful assembly guilty of an offence committed in pursuit of a common object
Speaking to TOI earlier, the Brigadier's wife recounted that the incident took place at 9:45 PM on Saturday while the family was out for a stroll. She was walking slightly behind her husband and son when they noticed two men drinking liquor inside a car parked near their society gate. In her complaint, she alleged that when they objected, the men misbehaved, used abusive language, and made remarks that outraged her modesty.
The family immediately dialed 112, the police helpline, and a PCR vehicle arrived at 10:15 PM. However, the situation escalated even in the presence of police personnel. The woman claimed that the car occupants spoke to the officers and had them converse with someone over the phone, after which no action was taken against the two. She further alleged that the PCR personnel behaved improperly during the interaction.
Shortly thereafter, two more cars arrived, and seven to eight men, allegedly known to the initial duo, stepped out. They threw my son to the ground and started beating him, the woman stated, resulting in multiple injuries for her son. When the Brigadier intervened, two to three men surrounded and assaulted him as well, causing bruises, including on his elbow.
Ongoing Investigation and Implications
The case highlights concerns over public safety and law enforcement responsiveness in Delhi. With the total arrests now at six, police are continuing their investigation to uncover all facets of the assault. The recovery of the vehicle and the detailed charges under the BNS underscore the seriousness with which authorities are treating this incident.
As the legal process unfolds, this case serves as a stark reminder of the challenges in maintaining order in urban areas and the importance of swift justice in incidents involving violence against public figures and citizens alike.
