Ghatkopar Factory Explosion: Owner Faces Negligence Charges After Fatal Steam Machine Blast

The Ghatkopar police have taken legal action against the owner of a garment factory following a devastating steam machine explosion that resulted in the tragic deaths of two workers and injuries to several others. The incident, which occurred in Ghatkopar (West), has sparked outrage over alleged safety failures at the industrial unit.

Details of the Tragic Incident

According to official reports, the explosion took place on January 20 at approximately 9:30 am at the Preeti Lady Garment factory, located in Sahakar Bhavan, Narayan Nagar on L.B.S. Road. At the time, multiple workers were operating an electric steam machine as part of their regular duties when the equipment suddenly exploded without warning.

The blast caused severe injuries to five individuals: Riyazuddin Shaikh, Hadis Ali Shaikh, Walayat Ali Sheikh, Shamshad, and Abhiman Mane. Tragically, Riyazuddin Shaikh and Hadis Ali Shaikh succumbed to their injuries during medical treatment, while the other three workers sustained various degrees of harm.

Legal Action and Charges Filed

In response to the incident, the Ghatkopar police have registered an offence of negligence against the factory owner, Akshay Anand Gupta. He has been booked under specific sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including:

  • Section 106: Caused by negligent acts not amounting to culpable homicide
  • Negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter
  • Act endangering life or personal safety of others

The complaint alleges that Gupta failed to implement adequate safety precautions, fire safety measures, and proper care for workers handling hazardous equipment. It further states that the factory operated without sufficient security arrangements and safeguards, despite the use of high-risk machinery like the steam machine.

Investigation and Safety Concerns

Police authorities have taken cognisance of the complaint and initiated a thorough investigation into the matter. The probe aims to examine safety compliance at the factory and determine the exact responsibility for the explosion. Preliminary findings suggest a pattern of reckless conduct and negligence that may have contributed to the fatal accident.

This incident highlights broader concerns about industrial safety standards in garment manufacturing units, particularly in densely populated areas like Ghatkopar. The lack of proper safety protocols for operating dangerous machinery has raised questions about regulatory oversight and employer accountability.

As the investigation continues, authorities are focusing on ensuring that such tragedies are prevented in the future through stricter enforcement of safety regulations. The case serves as a stark reminder of the critical need for robust safety measures in workplaces to protect workers' lives and well-being.
