Goa Chief Minister Announces Verna Forensic Lab to Boost Justice Delivery

Panaji: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has announced that a state-of-the-art forensic laboratory at Verna will be inaugurated within days, marking a significant upgrade to Goa's criminal justice infrastructure. Speaking at an exhibition on the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), Sawant emphasized that this development, coupled with police department enhancements, will ensure more efficient investigations and quicker case closures.

Forensic Laboratory and Police Upgrades to Transform Investigations

"The full-fledged forensic lab at Verna has been readied. It will be inaugurated in a few days," stated Sawant. He highlighted that over the past five years, the forensic department has undergone substantial upgrades, becoming well-equipped with trained staff. "Now, cases in Goa will be fast-tracked, and this will give people justice faster," he added, underscoring the lab's role in expediting legal processes.

Goa Leads in Implementing New Criminal Laws

Sawant inaugurated the exhibition on three new criminal laws at Kala Academy, attended by key officials including the DGP, IGP, director of prosecution, and senior police officers. He proudly noted that Goa stands first in the country to implement these laws, attributing this achievement to the dedication and professionalism of the Goa Police. Exhibition Showcases Comprehensive Criminal Justice Process

The exhibition featured 10 stalls set up by various departments, including police, judiciary, prosecution, forensic science, medical, and prison services. These stalls artistically presented the entire criminal justice journey—from FIR filing and investigation to forensic analysis, prosecution, judicial proceedings, and postmortem. Sawant explained that the new laws represent a shift toward a citizen-centric, transparent, and technology-driven system focused on speedy justice and victim empowerment.

Awareness and Transparency in Legal Reforms

Sawant stressed the importance of public awareness in understanding rights and the evolving legal landscape. "The forensic department used to be like a hidden department, with nobody paying attention to it," he remarked, highlighting past neglect. Now, with these reforms, the department is poised to play a crucial role in ensuring justice, reflecting a broader commitment to improving Goa's legal ecosystem for its citizens.
