Elderly Woman's Gold Jewellery Worth Rs 8.25 Lakh Stolen During BRTS Bus Journey in Ahmedabad
In a distressing incident in Ahmedabad, an 83-year-old woman has filed a police complaint after her bag containing gold jewellery valued at approximately Rs 8.25 lakh was allegedly stolen during a BRTS bus journey. The theft occurred on Tuesday, and the complaint was lodged with Satellite police on Thursday, highlighting concerns about safety on public transport.
Details of the Theft Incident
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the victim, Saryu Dalal, a resident of Adalaj in Gandhinagar, was traveling with her elder sister, Kundan Gandhi, and her son, Rahul Dalal. The trio was on their way to AB Jewellers at Shivranjani to get ornaments made, indicating a planned visit to the jewellery showroom.
They boarded BRTS route number 47 from the Ambaji Township BRTS bus stop near Trimandir in Adalaj around noon. After a journey of about an hour, they alighted at Shivranjani BRTS station around 1.05 pm. It was upon disembarking that Dalal checked her handbag and discovered the theft.
Stolen Items and Their Value
The stolen items were kept in a small white pouch from a jewellery house, which was inside her purse. The pouch contained:
- 5 gold biscuits, each weighing 20 grams
- 1 gold biscuit weighing 2.5 grams
- A gold bangle weighing approximately 20 grams
- A gold necklace weighing about 15 grams
The total weight of the gold amounted to around 137.5 grams. Based on current market rates, the estimated value of the stolen jewellery is Rs 8.25 lakh, making this a significant financial loss for the elderly victim.

The Satellite police have registered the complaint and are investigating the case. This incident raises serious questions about the security measures on BRTS buses in Ahmedabad, especially for vulnerable passengers like the elderly.
