Groom Allegedly Flees Wedding Venue Over Unmet Dowry Demand in Aligarh
A wedding ceremony in the Iglas area of Aligarh district descended into turmoil and chaos after the groom reportedly fled the venue following an unmet dowry demand of Rs 5 lakh, according to local police authorities. The incident has sparked outrage and highlighted the persistent issue of dowry harassment in the region.
Wedding Celebrations Turn Sour Amid Last-Minute Demands
The groom, identified as Gaurav Kumar (25) from Mathura, arrived with his wedding procession at the bride's residence in Hastpur village. The arrangements had been meticulously planned and executed with the full consent of both families involved. The baraatis were served dinner, and the traditional ceremonies were proceeding smoothly as per the schedule.
However, tensions suddenly escalated when the groom and his relatives allegedly raised a last-minute demand for Rs 5 lakh in cash as additional dowry. The bride's family, caught off guard by this unexpected request, found themselves unable to meet the substantial financial demand on such short notice.
Bride Left Devastated as Groom Abandons Ceremony
When the dowry demand remained unmet, the groom allegedly abandoned the wedding ceremony midway, leaving the bride, Rekha (22), utterly devastated. The joyous celebrations came to an abrupt and painful halt, transforming what should have been a festive occasion into a scene of distress and humiliation.
The bride's father, Ramesh Chand, promptly lodged a formal complaint at the Iglas police station, accusing the groom and his family of dowry harassment. Police officials confirmed that an investigation has been initiated, with statements being recorded from both parties to ascertain the complete sequence of events.
Family's Pleas Fall on Deaf Ears
Mahipal Singh, the bride's uncle, recounted the family's desperate attempts to reason with the groom's side. "We folded our hands and pleaded with them to reconsider," he stated. "But they refused to listen to our appeals and eventually took the groom away from the venue."
Ramesh Chand expressed his anguish, saying, "I am a poor man, but the groom left only for money. We had agreed to everything beforehand, and this sudden demand has shattered our daughter's dreams."
Police Intervention Fails to Salvage Marriage
SHO Avdhesh Kumar of Iglas police station revealed that both parties were subsequently called to the police station for a discussion in an attempt to resolve the conflict. However, no resolution was reached during these negotiations. The marriage was eventually called off entirely, with both sides submitting a written compromise agreement to the authorities.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the continuing social menace of dowry demands, despite legal prohibitions and ongoing awareness campaigns. The local community has expressed shock and condemnation over the episode, which has left a young woman's future uncertain and a family grappling with emotional and social repercussions.
