Suspected Honour Killing Rocks Gujarat Village
A shocking case of suspected honour killing has emerged from Valukad village in Ghogha taluka of Bhavnagar district, Gujarat. In a brutal incident that unfolded on Saturday night, a 29-year-old man was murdered by being stabbed multiple times in full public view. The attack is allegedly linked to his court marriage to a woman from the same village, sparking outrage and a police investigation.
Details of the Fatal Attack
The victim, identified as Ravi alias Lalo Kalotra, was ambushed around 9:30 PM near a bus station. According to police reports, three assailants—Haresh alias Hari Aal, Kishor alias Kishan Chauhan, and an unidentified accomplice—carried out the assault. One of the attackers had his face covered during the incident. The entire episode was reportedly captured on CCTV, and a purported video of the killing has since gone viral on social media platforms, drawing widespread attention.
Background of the Relationship
Ravi, who worked as a driver, had developed a relationship with the woman while both were employed in Ahmedabad approximately four years ago. Despite efforts by Ravi's family to formalize the relationship, the woman's father, Munna Balya, reportedly refused to accept the match. In 2023, the couple proceeded with a court marriage in Ahmedabad. However, the woman continued to reside with her parents, while Ravi frequently travelled between Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar before returning to Valukad village.
Police Investigation and Complaint
A complaint was filed by the victim's mother, 62-year-old Dhani Kalotra, at the Vartej police station. She alleged that the murder was orchestrated by Munna Balya, who was enraged over his daughter's court marriage to Ravi. Both Ravi and the woman belong to the same community, adding complexity to the case. Police have registered a case against Munna Balya and three others under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Investigators are probing the incident from an honour killing angle, suspecting that opposition to the inter-family relationship and the alleged marriage may have motivated the fatal attack.
Scene of the Crime and Aftermath
On the night of March 28, Ravi had gone to the Valukad bus station when he was attacked. The assault took place in front of his uncle, Bhupat Kalotra, who witnessed the horrific event. Ravi sustained multiple stab wounds to his chest and abdomen, with two knives lodged in his abdomen. He was rushed to Sir T Hospital in Bhavnagar but was declared dead on arrival by doctors. Authorities have launched a manhunt to apprehend the accused, who remain at large as the investigation continues.
This incident highlights the persistent issue of honour-based violence in certain regions, raising concerns about community tensions and legal enforcement. The police are urging the public to cooperate with the investigation while emphasizing the seriousness of such crimes under Indian law.
