Gurgaon Traffic Police Issue 1,855 Wrong-Side Driving Challans in Just Seven Days
Wrong-side driving remains a rampant problem on Gurgaon's roads. The city's traffic police issued a staggering 1,855 challans for this violation in just one week. This happened despite recent warnings about FIR registrations for such offenses.
Massive Enforcement Drive Yields 22,000 Challans
Between January 12 and 18, Gurgaon traffic police conducted an intensive enforcement campaign. They issued approximately 22,000 challans during this period. Out of these, about 13,000 were physical challans handed directly to violators.
Wrong-side driving emerged as one of the top categories of violations. The police focused their efforts on major corridors like the Gurgaon-Delhi Expressway and Dwarka Expressway. They used advanced technology including NHAI cameras and drones to detect violations.
FIR Warnings Fail to Deter Reckless Drivers
Authorities recently started registering FIRs against motorists who drive on the wrong side. This stricter action applies particularly in cases involving traffic disruption or dangerous driving. Since January 1, police have registered 17 FIRs under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Motor Vehicles Act.
These FIRs were filed following a two-week awareness drive that informed commuters about the harsher penalties. However, the continued high number of wrong-side driving violations suggests these warnings have had limited effect on driver behavior.
Detailed Breakdown of Traffic Violations
The enforcement drive from January 12 to 18 resulted in 12,956 physical challans. Beyond wrong-side driving, other major violations included:
- 1,107 challans for wrong parking
- 1,080 challans for not wearing seat belts
- 830 challans for riding without helmets
- 332 challans for drunken driving
Additional violations covered dangerous U-turns, triple riding, overspeeding, mobile phone use while driving, noise pollution, and improper lane changes. The police also issued 3,545 challans through traffic cameras, with the majority being for no-entry violations and overspeeding.
An extra 276 challans addressed pollution-related offenses. The total fine collected from field-level challans during this one-week period reached Rs 1.67 crore.
Persistent Problem Evident in 2025 Data
Data from 2025 confirms that wrong-side driving continues to plague Gurgaon's roads. Throughout the year, authorities fined 203,936 motorists for this violation alone.
Other significant violations in 2025 included:
- 120,000 overspeeding cases
- 180,000 wrong-side parking violations
- 79,615 challans for sudden lane changes
- 390,000 helmet violations
- 450,000 fines for triple riding or pillion rider violations
Police also recorded 5,812 cases of mobile phone use while driving. They have identified this as an emerging cause of accidents in the city.
The situation highlights ongoing challenges in maintaining road discipline despite increased enforcement and stricter penalties. Gurgaon's traffic authorities continue to grapple with changing driver behavior on the city's busy thoroughfares.
