In a major incident of misconduct, the Gurgaon police have suspended four of its personnel, including an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), after a car driven by the ASI crashed into a VIP pilot vehicle on New Year's Eve. The collision occurred near the INOX Mall at the Sector 4/7 intersection, disrupting the convoy of a local legislator.
The Incident: A Reckless Turn Leads to Crash
According to the First Information Report (FIR) registered at the New Colony police station, the incident took place around 9:30 PM on December 31. The accused, ASI Baljit, who is posted at the same police station, arrived at a security checkpoint near INOX Mall in a white Hyundai Venue. The checkpoint was part of the New Year's Eve security arrangements and was being supervised by SI Ramesh.
Later, ASI Baljit left the mall with SPO Ajay Pal and persuaded two head constables, Sanjay and Hansraj, who were on duty, to join him in his car for a meal. While driving at high speed, Baljit allegedly took a sharp U-turn at the Sector 4/7 intersection towards New Colony. It was during this reckless maneuver that his vehicle smashed into the VIP pilot vehicle, a Scorpio, which was coming from the railway station side. The pilot car was part of the convoy escorting city MLA Mukesh Sharma, who was travelling in another car behind it.
Aftermath and Investigation Findings
An immediate argument broke out at the spot as the pilot vehicle sustained damage. SI Ramesh, who witnessed the crash, rushed to the site and made a critical observation: the Hyundai Venue driven by ASI Baljit did not have a front number plate. The FIR further states that Baljit appeared to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
Following information about the crash, SI Naresh and other police teams reached the location. Based on the complaint filed by SI Ramesh, a case was registered against the involved policemen at the New Colony police station. The charges invoked include sections 281 (rash driving), 125 (rash or negligent acts endangering life), and 324(4) (mischief) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 185 (drunk driving) of the Motor Vehicles Act.
Disciplinary Action and Official Response
The Gurgaon police acted swiftly, suspending all four personnel involved: ASI Baljit, head constables Sanjay and Hansraj, and SPO Ajay Pal. A senior police officer confirmed that Baljit was not on official duty at the time of the incident. "We are checking whether he was under the influence of alcohol," the officer stated, adding that disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against all four for misconduct and violation of service rules.
Despite repeated attempts by the media, MLA Mukesh Sharma could not be reached for his comments on the security breach involving his convoy. The incident has raised serious questions about discipline within the police force, especially during high-security events like New Year's Eve.
