Gurgaon Man Fatally Struck While Clearing Road Obstruction
In a tragic incident in Gurgaon, a 48-year-old man lost his life after being struck by a car while attempting to remove hazardous pipes from the road. The accident occurred near Manipal Hospital in Palam Vihar late on Thursday night, around 2 AM, highlighting severe road safety concerns.
Details of the Fatal Incident
The victim, identified as Harindra Nath, a resident of New Palam Vihar and an employee at a private company, was returning home after a trip to Mehendipur Balaji with his manager. After being dropped off in Sector 23, Nath booked a bike taxi to complete his journey and informed his family he was on his way for dinner.
As the bike taxi approached Manipal Hospital, Nath and the driver encountered pipes obstructing the road. In a selfless act to prevent potential accidents, Nath alighted from the motorcycle and began moving the pipes. At that moment, a Tata Nexon car with registration number HR26FF2861, speeding from the Rezang La Chowk direction, collided with him.
Witness Account and Aftermath
The bike taxi driver, who witnessed the event, reported that the impact threw Nath several metres, causing him to land on the car. Shockingly, the car driver did not stop; instead, he drove over Nath in an attempt to flee the scene. Nath was rushed to a government hospital in Sector 10 but succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Police teams promptly arrived at the accident site. The body was transferred to the mortuary and later handed over to the family for last rites. Nath's daughter, Charu Sharma, noted that his body bore visible tyre marks, underscoring the brutality of the incident.
Legal Action and Arrest
Based on a complaint filed by Nath's wife, a case was registered at Palam Vihar police station under sections 106 (death by negligence) and 281 (rash driving) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Following investigations, Anand Yadav, a 30-year-old yoga instructor and resident of Uttar Pradesh, was arrested while returning home after attending a dinner.
An officer stated, "He will be produced before the court, and strict action will be taken against him," emphasizing the seriousness of the charges. This arrest marks a step towards accountability in a case that has drawn attention to road safety and negligent driving practices.
Broader Implications for Road Safety
This incident raises critical questions about road maintenance and driver responsibility in urban areas like Gurgaon. Nath's attempt to clear the road, though heroic, ended in tragedy due to reckless driving. It serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by both road hazards and negligent motorists.
Authorities are urged to enhance surveillance and enforcement to prevent similar occurrences. The community mourns the loss of a responsible citizen while calling for stricter measures to ensure safer roads for all.
