HC Seeks Clarity on Ballot vs EVM Row
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has sought clarity on the ongoing controversy surrounding the use of ballot papers versus Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in elections. The court's directive came during a hearing on a petition that raised concerns about the reliability and transparency of EVMs.
ECI Offers Rajasthan Machines
In response, the Election Commission of India (ECI) informed the court that it could provide EVMs from Rajasthan within two to three days for verification purposes. The ECI's offer aims to address the petitioner's demand for a physical examination of the machines to ensure their integrity.
The court has asked the ECI to clarify the procedure for verifying the EVMs and to submit a detailed report. The hearing has been adjourned to allow both parties to present further arguments.
This development comes amid a larger debate on the credibility of EVMs, with some political parties and activists calling for a return to ballot papers. The ECI has consistently defended the use of EVMs, citing their security features and successful deployment in numerous elections.
The High Court's intervention underscores the importance of ensuring free and fair elections. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for future electoral processes in India.
