Patiala: The headless body of a boy was discovered in the Bhakra canal near Kakrala village in Patiala district on Tuesday evening. The body was spotted drifting in the water, prompting a recovery operation by local divers.
Initial Recovery Efforts
"Due to its condition, we initially suspected it was an animal carcass. The sight shocked everyone once we pulled it out and realised it was a child," said Shankar, one of the divers involved in the operation. The divers faced a grim task as they brought the body to the shore.
Police Investigation Underway
Police have stated that the child, estimated to be around seven or eight years old, has not been identified. A probe has been launched, and authorities are reviewing missing persons' reports from Patiala and neighbouring districts. Inspector Gurpreet Singh, SHO of Passiana, said, "It is not clear whether the injuries were inflicted before death or caused while the body was floating in the canal. The exact circumstances will become clear after the post-mortem."
Divers' Observations
The divers reported seeing deep wounds and exposed organs, raising suspicions that a sharp-edged weapon might have been involved. However, police have urged caution and refused to jump to conclusions. The post-mortem examination is expected to provide crucial insights into the cause and timing of the injuries.
The discovery has sent shockwaves through the local community, and residents are anxiously awaiting updates on the investigation. Police are continuing their inquiries and appealing for any information that could help identify the child or the circumstances surrounding the incident.
