Bombay High Court Directs Formation of Expert Committee for Lonar Lake Investigation

The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court has taken a significant step to address the alarming rise in water levels at Lonar Lake, a unique geological formation in Buldhana district, Maharashtra. In a suo moto public interest litigation (PIL), the court has suggested forming a specialized committee to investigate and determine the root cause behind this phenomenon.

Court's Directives and Committee Formation Process

Without waiting for responses from various government departments that were served notices, the high court, on March 17, directed amicus curiae Mohit Khajanchi to suggest names of experts to be included in the proposed committee. The court has tasked this committee with not only investigating the rising water level phenomenon but also finding sustainable solutions to the problem.

Mohit Khajanchi informed TOI that he will recommend names of appropriate experts during the next hearing scheduled for April 7. The committee's mandate will include comprehensive scientific investigation and analysis of the factors contributing to the water level increase.

Environmental Impact and Conservation Concerns

Since September 2025, water levels at Lonar Lake have risen dramatically by 15-20 feet, creating significant environmental and cultural challenges. This increase has resulted in the partial submersion of several ancient Shiva temples and the Kamalja Devi Temple clustered along the lake's banks.

Conservationists and environmental experts have expressed serious concerns about the potential consequences of delayed action. They warn that failure to promptly identify and address the source of the rising water could endanger Lonar Lake's unique biodiversity and compromise its invaluable geological legacy.

Background and Significance of Lonar Lake

Lonar Lake holds special significance as one of the world's few hyper-velocity impact craters formed by a meteorite collision. The site represents:

  • A unique geological formation of international importance
  • A biodiversity hotspot with distinctive ecosystems
  • A cultural heritage site with ancient temple complexes
  • A natural wonder that attracts scientific research and tourism

The court's intervention through this PIL demonstrates the urgency of addressing environmental changes that threaten both natural and cultural heritage sites. The proposed expert committee represents a structured approach to understanding and mitigating the factors causing the water level increase, with potential implications for similar geological formations worldwide.
